Soft Closure Announcement

Hello Parents and Students,

In consultation with officials at the Weber-Morgan Health Department, Bonneville High School will be placed in another soft closure due to positive COVID tests. We are currently sitting at 17 positive cases at Bonneville.

School soft closures due to Covid-19 outbreaks are certainly not ideal, but the timing of this soft closure is such that students will not miss as many total days of in-person instruction and learning when compared to our previous school soft closures. Health guidelines have recently been adjusted related to school closure duration. A school now closes for 10 calendar days versus 14 days total.  With tomorrow, Friday January 15th scheduled as a teacher work day (no school for students) and Monday, January 18th being Martin Luther King Day (no school), students will engage with their teachers online Tuesday, January 19th through Friday, January 22nd. This helps to reduce our students time away from the building to only 4 days. With the long weekend ahead and next weekend factored in, six of the 10 days of school closure are days students would have already been out of school. We will return to in-person learning on Monday, January 25th. We feel very fortunate that we were able to wrap-up the second quarter today in-person.

A couple of important items to know with regards to this soft closure:

  • This is not considered a quarantine for all students in the school. This is a preventative measure to help slow the spread of COVID-19 by reducing the number of people in the school. Any students who have been quarantined to this point by the Weber-Morgan Health Department are still considered quarantined until their release date. If your child is ever exposed at school to someone who has tested positive for COVID, we will contact you directly regarding the quarantine requirements.
  • Tuesday starts the 3rd quarter. Any student who has a missing class on their schedule should email their counselor immediately to help get that fixed. Please check myweber.wsd.net immediately to review your schedule.
  • Any student with an appointment for a schedule change next week with your counselor should plan to keep that appointment. This will help to ensure that your schedule is correct when you return to campus.
  • During the soft closure, all students are expected to attend and participate with their classes during the designated times. This should be done via Google Meet with the teachers. Attendance will be taken to ensure that students are attending. Students should check their teachers Canvas sites for more information. We are going to follow the schedule below each day (separate document here):

1st/5th period: 8:30am - 9:15am

2nd/6th period: 9:30am - 10:15am

3rd/7th period: 10:30am - 11:15am

4th/8th period: 11:30am - 12:15pm

  • Students, during this soft closure, DO NOT consider this a "Work at your own pace" situation. Be diligent about getting into your teachers Google Meet and completing the assignments. We want to make sure you keep up with your classes because this represents the start of the 3rd quarter.
  • Communication is going to be key with your teachers. If there are questions or concerns, ask early and get the help. Teachers are available from 1:00pm - 3:00pm for individual online meetings as needed, by appointment. Do not hesitate to ask for help.
  • Any students that test positive during the soft closure should still be reported to the school for tracking purposes. This will help us get back in school and not have to extend the closure because of potential unknown problems.
  • During this school closure, in accordance with the health department and UHSAA guidelines, our winter sports teams will continue their seasons. Any previously quarantined athlete is not eligible to participate with these teams until they are released from quarantine. We will be beginning our COVID testing procedures in order to ensure those programs can continue. This includes our band, choir, and orchestra concerts.

We will continue to work closely with officials from the Weber Morgan Health Department in monitoring this situation and we will provide updates as needed.

We would like to remind everyone to continue to be vigilant in following current health guidelines by wearing face coverings, practicing good hygiene and physically distancing from others to prevent the spread of COVID-19. We look forward to getting our students back to school. Please continue to do your part as we move through this soft closure.

I am very sorry to have to send this email. It breaks my heart and saddens me that we have to do this again. As a school, we hate to lose the opportunity to interact with our students. Please do not hesitate to reach out if there are questions, struggles, or anything else that we can help with. Please check your email often for updates.
