Davis DeGroot compete in a sprint at last year's state competition

In case you missed it, local reporter and photographer James Tate published an article last week previewing Region 5 track and field. A good chunk of his reporting focused on outstanding Laker, Davis DeGroot.

As Tate wrote, "At the center of the sprint conversation stands Bonneville senior Davis DeGroot, a University of Kentucky commit and one of the most decorated sprinters in Utah high school history. DeGroot finished second in the 100 meters at last year’s region championship meet before powering to titles in both the 200 and 400, and he returns with personal bests of 10.69 in the 100, 21.16 in the 200, and 46.11 in the 400. Those marks alone make him the defining figure in the state, but his offseason development has elevated expectations even further."

Already this spring season, DeGroot has run a 10.72, which puts him near the top for fastest times in the state so far.

According to Tate, months of focused work on speed endurance and race mechanics have positioned DeGroot not only to repeat as a double state champion in the 200 and 400, but to challenge the all‑time UHSAA 400‑meter record. Tate wrote, "His personal best of 46.11, set last summer on the national stage at the Great Southwest Track & Field Classic at the University of New Mexico, already places him among the fastest quarter‑milers Utah has ever produced. That performance established him as a legitimate national‑level threat, and his offseason training with Gold Medal Athletics has only strengthened that momentum."

In addition, DeGroot has head coach Kenzie Harter and sprint coach John Keefer to thank for many of the workouts and training from last year to now to gear up for, hopefully, a special senior season. Harter, Keefer, and all of Bonneville's Track and Field coaches are hopeful for all their athletes to spring forward in their development and accomplishments this spring, which will really get heated after Spring Break. As Harter said, "We are extremely excited to see where this season takes all our Track and Field Athletes."

Please wish them all good luck on their upcoming season!
